This workshop examines using art to help children develop critical and creative thinking skills with open-ended developmentally appropriate art activities.

Participants will be able to: 

  • Recognize developmentally appropriate art activities.

  • Encourage critical thinking and reasoning while working on art projects.

  • Encourage creativity by providing open-ended art activities that focus on the process, not the final product.

Classroom Management/Guidance Should be Easier than Herding Cats

This workshop focuses on good classroom management/guidance strategies for running an efficient and nurturing environment. Ten sanity-saving tips will be given to help a teacher build a positive classroom atmosphere.

Participants will be able to:

  • Understand to the latest research for setting up a classroom to avoid negative behavior.

  • Be familiar with basic procedures and routines that create a nurturing learning environment.

  • Receive a suggested list of sanity-saving tips for making early childhood classrooms efficient and positive.

Understanding the developmental sequence of mathematics skills appropriate for preschool and kindergarten children.

Participants will be able to: 

  • Recognize the developmentally appropriate sequence of early childhood mathematics skills.

  • Understand how to teach and support each skill with hands-on activities.

  • Organize engaging and fun mathematics centers that foster independence.

Mad Scientist! Combining Art and Scientific  Reasoning

Early childhood scientific reasoning skills lend themselves naturally to art and other hands-on activities.  This workshop encourages teachers to set up art-based experiments to support scientific reason and critical thinking.

Participants will be able to:

  • Recognize scientific reasoning skills for young children.

  • Observe science experiments that are based in hands-on art processes.

  • Understand how to use common classroom materials for science support.

Embracing the 'E' in STEM/STEAM! Engineering Activities for Young Children!

Using basic classroom materials, participants will learning how to adjust classroom activities to promote appropriate engineering thinking skills for preschool and kindergarten children.

Participants will be able to: 

  • Discover how to adjust their every day classroom activities to support the development of engineering skills.

  • Apply those discoveries using hands-on materials, readily found in early childhood classrooms.

  • Brainstorm and record ideas for developing critical thinking during their organized engineering activities.

Full STEAM Ahead! STEM Activities that Support Language and Literacy Development!

Hands-on language and literacy activities, which are based in math, science, and engineering are the best way for young children to learn about our world and develop emergent literacy skills.  This workshop will give concrete examples and provide materials for engaged learning, appropriate for preschool and kindergarten children.

Participants will be able to: 

  • Observe how hands-on science, engineering, and math activities can promote language and literacy development.

  • Have the opportunity to evaluate how to integrate STEM with language and literacy using available materials in their own classroom.

  • Analyze the components of a well-balanced classroom, supporting multiple skills with each activity.
